India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Pollution Following Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city found themselves inhaling extremely polluted air that registered in the "severe" range.
Alarming Pollution Levels
Various sections of the city recorded an AQI over 500, which represents 10x the safe limit recommended by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, equating to 15-20x higher than safe limits.
Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly haze that covers the metropolis as winter begins.
Yet recently, the newly elected local administration petitioned the judicial authority to propose a modification of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and public health".
Legal Ruling and Enforcement
To the disappointment of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during specific hours throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the city, with little regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.
Many air quality sensors throughout the city recorded pollution reaching highest levels around late evening to some of the worst measurements observed during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Consequences
The widespread use of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing worsening pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants traveling from India following the events.
Long-Standing Environmental Issue
Extremely elevated concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.
Near Diwali, the concentration of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to spike to significantly exceeding the most severe levels ever documented in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated city.
Multiple Contamination Contributors
The problem in the city is caused by a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of Punjab and Haryana.
Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing dangerous pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as cooler air sets in.
Medical and Economic Consequences
Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is significant, according to various research.
These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.
The pollution is estimated to be accounting for ten thousand untimely mortalities annually in Delhi.
