New research indicates that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such treatments should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
