Zelenskyy Affirms Preparedness for War-Time Polls After Comments from Trump.

Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy has stated he is ready to conduct a presidential election amid the current war, on the condition that Ukraine's parliament and foreign partners allow it. This announcement follows accusations from the U.S. President that he was clinging to power.

Obviously frustrated by the comments from overseas, Zelenskyy emphasized that "This question for the people of Ukraine, rather than for individuals from partner countries, with all appropriate respect to our allies."

Nevertheless, he promised to explore possibilities for carrying out a poll in the coming months. "Since this question is currently being posed by the leader of the United States, our ally, I will answer directly: look, I am willing for elections," Zelenskyy remarked on Tuesday night.

"Furthermore, I am calling on ... the United States to assist me, possibly in conjunction with European colleagues, to provide security for the elections, and subsequently within the following 60-90 day period Ukraine will be prepared to conduct the elections. I personally have the will and willingness for this," he continued.

The U.S. President's Assertions and Ukrainian Constitutional Reality

These remarks were voiced by Trump in a lengthy interview released by the publication Politico earlier on Tuesday. "They have not held an election in a long time," said the American leader. "Understand, they talk about a democracy, but it reaches a point where it's undemocratic any more."

Zelenskyy's presidential term expired in May of last year, but the nation's constitution prohibits elections during armed conflict. Even, his political opponents have stated repeatedly that safety and political realities do not permit organizing an election during hostilities.

"It would only be detrimental," stated Serhiy Rakhmanin. "He's the supreme military commander, and the country is in a position where we don't have that luxury, whatever problems we might have with him. It would only help the adversary," he concluded.

Practical and Constitutional Obstacles

Zelenskyy highlighted two major issues that require solutions: the practical challenge of permitting soldiers, millions of displaced people, and those living under occupation to cast ballots, and additionally, how to lawfully conduct a vote given that martial law is in effect.

He asked for guidance from partner nations on securing the elections, and from lawmakers on how to change the law to allow a vote. "{I am waiting for proposals from partners, I am awaiting ideas from our parliamentarians, and I am prepared to go to the elections," said Zelenskyy.

Broader Diplomatic Background

Zelenskyy was speaking while traveling back to Ukraine after concluding a series of visits to multiple EU nations. This coincides with the U.S. administration has reportedly applying pressure on Kyiv to sign a settlement.

Earlier, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., suggested at a forum that Zelenskyy was prolonging the war due to concerns of losing power. He also suggested that his father might "walk away" from Ukraine if the conflict continues. "{It's not accurate. But it's not precisely wrong," commented Trump, when questioned about his son's statement.

Reports indicate that the U.S. has proposed Ukraine should cede the eastern territories to secure peace, a concession that would be extremely controversial within Ukraine. Furthermore, there is currently no evidence that Russia is ready to sign any deal, including one that might seem favorable to Moscow.
